The Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire and Derbyshire Intergroups jointly run the A.A. telephone helpline for the East Midlands. It operates by volunteers (responders) doing four shifts of service between the hours of 8am and midnight every day of the week. At the present time we have vacancies both for regular volunteers who are to offer service every week and those who feel able to offer to cover from time to time. The way the helpline works is that calls that are received are routed through to your own phone so you do not have to leave home to carry out this service. The role of the responder is to gain the confidence of the caller and ideally as a result link them to a 12 stepper in the area the caller lives so that the 12 stepper can explain more about the way our fellowship can help the caller recover. Calls the responder makes out to 12 steppers can be reclaimed from Intergroup. It is a great way of doing service so if you are interested, consult with your sponsor and see if they feel you are ready to do this role which requires one year of sobriety.
